Online Craps: Rules and Overview

Craps may not be one of the easiest casino games to get to grips with, but it’s certainly one of the most popular. Believed to be Arabian in origin, craps games arguably generate the most noise and excitement in a casino with large groups of people all eagerly wagering their money on the roll (or a series of rolls) of two dice.

The game is one that is played by one or more players against a casino which is one of the reasons why such camaraderie can be found around a craps table. Each player takes it in turn to be designated “The Shooter” (or dice roller). Their first roll (or Come Out Roll) is generally deemed one of the most crucial aspects of craps play.

If the Come Out Roll turns up a 7 or an 11, it is seen as a general win for the players at the table. However if a 2,3 or 12 is rolled on the Come Out then those same players will be dealt an automatic loss.

It’s when any other number is rolled, then the value of the dice is deemed to have “Set the Point” and the game begins to get interesting! Once the point has been set, the same player will continue to roll the dice until they roll the same number again. However, if that player rolls a seven before they hit the point again, they will lose and the action will pass to the next player on the table.

However, before the action passes on to the next player there’s a whole lot of fun to be had betting on the outcome of the dice.

The game of craps involves a large number of different types of bet for players to wager on. If you’re new to the game, it’s a good idea to get used to a handful of the simplest types of bet before you progress onto some of the more complicated ways to wager your chips.

Pass Line Bet

The player will win instantly if the Come Out Roll shows a 7 or 11. Equally they will lose if the Come out comes up a 2,3 or 12. If any other number is thrown, the player will still win as long as that number is thrown again before a seven is rolled.

Don’t Pass Line Bet

As you may well figure out, the Don’t Pass Line Bet is the almost exact opposite of the Pass Line Bet. When playing in brick and mortar casinos, the Don’t Pass Line Bet tends to be frowned upon as the player is essentially betting against the shooter, and is said to be “Playing the Dark Side.”

However, you may well want to get away from the scornful looks by playing in a casino online where you can take advantage of the additional value that a Don’t Pass Line Bet offers to players.

A player will win instantly if the Come Out roll of the dice is 7 or 11. They will win if the Come Out is 2 or 3 (a 12 will tie you with the casino). Players will still win if the Come Out roll is thrown again before a the next seven appears.

Place Bet

These types of bets can only be made once the Point has been set. Players can wager on the value of a dice roll being 4,5,6,8,9 or 10 and if these numbers are rolled before the next seven, the player win. The value of the payout will be determined by the number you’ve bet on. 4 or 10 will pay out 9-5, 5 or 9 pays 7-5 and 6 or 8 pays 7-6.

Field Bet

Field Bets are similar to Place Bets other than the fact that they only affect the next roll of the dice. A player can wager on a 2,3,4,9,10,11 or 12 being rolled and if they’re right they’ll be paid out according to the following scale: a 2 pays double, 12 pays 3-1 and any other number pays even (1-1)

Big Six, Big Eight Bets

These types of bets can be made at any time. They win if the shooter rolls a 6 or an 8 before the next 7 is rolled. All winning bets are paid at 1-1.

Take the time to master these bets. Make sure that you feel comfortable making them at the correct time and understand the value that they offer before moving on to learning other bets. That way, by the time you’ve mastered those betting types, you should be comfortable with the game of craps.

It may be a little more complicated to learn, but once you’ve got the hang of the basics it’s thoroughly enjoyable and one of the most glamorous games in the casino!
